4 Best Micro Breweries in Ballard
Ballard Craft Brewery Crawl – Seattle, WA
The 4 best micro breweries in Ballard can be all be found within about a four block radius! That’s right 4 craft breweries located just blocks from each other.
Recently, I was in Seattle to attend a Travel Massive event in Ballard. Our get-together was being held at one of the best microbreweries in Ballard.
So, this gave me the perfect excuse to do a mini pub crawl. Not that an excuse was really necessary.
Without any further ado, here are, in no particular order, the 4 best micro breweries in Ballard.
Lucky Envelope Brewing
Location: 907 NW 50th Street, Seattle, WA 98107 Phone: (206) 659-4075
I was at Lucky Envelope Brewing on a pleasant Thursday evening, and, because of limited time, was only able to taste one of the 7 brews they had on tap. The taproom is humble in size, and includes a small outdoor seating area. Current tap list includes: ENIAC Mosaic IPA, Helles Lager, Dark and Mild Pub Ale, Hefeweizen, Beardless Brewer Red, Grapefruit ENIAC IPA, and Two Pepper Pale Ale.
I had the ENIAC Mosaic IPA, and it was delicious. I am not a beer reviewer, so don’t expect flowery prose describing its nose and so forth. All I can say is that this is one tasty brew.
This is how Lucky describes this IPA: “Our flagship IPA, ENIAC screams Mosaic hops and a balanced malt profile with notes of juicy tropical fruit and resinous pine.” – 6.6% ABV, 74 IBU
Malts: Washington 2-Row, Munich, Crystal 30, Wheat Malt
Hops: Mosaic, Cascade, Centennial, Magnum
Location: 826B NW 49th St, Seattle, WA 98107 Phone: (206) 706-3400
Second on our crawl of the 4 best micro breweries in Ballard, is Populuxe Brewing. During my stop, I had the opportunity to try the Double IPA. A tasty brew that the brewer describes this way:
8.1% ABV, 65 IBU’s, 6 SRM)
Columbus and Simcoe hops abound in a resiny, dank hop profile which is still very drinkable despite its high gravity. Piney and tropical fruit flavors (melon, mango, papaya) and aromas. A true West Coast DIPA with a clean malt profile and dry finish.
Malt: Pale and Crystal 40L
Hops: Columbus, Centennial and Simcoe through out
Yeast: American Ale
I always enjoy a beer that has a slightly fruity aroma. It always gets the salivary glands working overtime. This was some tasty brew.
The setting is simple and friendly that offers a cozy atmosphere inside, and an expansive “beer garden” outside with many picnic tables, a covered area and patio that are heated, and two firepits. And, if you get hungry, you have choices.
Great local food trucks are available Friday and Saturday night, or, if you prefer, bring your own or order delivery. And, occassionally, live music is offered, too.

IMPERIAL RYE IPA
ABV: 8.4% IBU: 80
Intense citrus and floral aroma followed by a smooth medium full mouth feel. Citrus leads the flavor profile, with rye spice and bitterness coming through in the finish.
2014 National IIPA Champs – Elite 8
2014 Australian Intl. Beer Awards – Bronze
2013 World Beer Champs – Silver
2013 Washington Beer Awards – Silver
Another beer that I completely enjoyed.
Is there a bad beer brewed in Ballard? We’re moving on to Stoup Brewing to find out.
Last stop on our mini-crawl of the 4 best micro breweries in Ballard was Stoup Brewing. This was where the Travel Massive event was scheduled to happen. And, it turned out to be a great little venue to host the gathering from.
As the saying goes, “last, but certainly not least”! Stoup has a great atmosphere with a very nice tap room and outdoor seating area.
This LittleFilms video is a fun intro to Stoup Brewing.
While Stoup has an extensive list of brews on tap, not all are available all of the time. So, Northwest IPA was the choice while here. A great choice as it turned out. The description of the Northwest IPA is:
ABV: 7.5%, IBU: 60, SRM: 7; This beer greets you with floral and citrus aromas, the result of aggressive Cascade dry-hopping. The addition of Chinook hops leave you with a lingering pineyness reminiscent of a hike in the mountains. A light malt sweetness provides balance while maintaining the hop forward character.
