5 Things NOT to Miss in Alsace
Our best places to visit in Alsace
Of all the places that we have visited, there are few that can compare to the beauty and charm of Alsace. And, that is why we put together this list of 5 things not to miss in Alsace.
This may seem an obvious choice as it is the major town of the Alsace region, but we would feel remiss if we didn’t include it in our list. The old part of Colmar is one of the most inspiring that we have visited.5 Things NOT to Miss in Alsace during your trip to France. Click To Tweet
The number one place to visit in Colmar? Colmar itself. The term fairy-tale is so over used, that I hesitate to use it here, but there is no other way to describe this ancient town. Petite Venice will overwhelm you with its picturesque charm.
It’s hard to believe that in the olden days this would have been one of the most disgusting areas of town as it was home to fishmongers and tanners. The stench must have been atrocious!
#2 Chateau Haut-Koenigsbourg
This was one of our favorite stops while visiting the Alsace Rue du Vin, or Route of Wine! And, we knew nothing of it. We were just driving around and saw a sign.
You don’t want to miss this, and that is why it needs special mention. Chateau Haut-Koenigsbourg is one of the best chateaux that we have visited. And, we have visited a lot.
Situated as it is high above the Alsace valley, part of the excitement of visiting is the view from here. But, the main attraction is the castle itself. It is so well done, you will really find yourself transported back through the ages.
#4 Alsatian Wineries
Well of course you are going to visit at least a few of the many wineries. This is after all a major wine producing region. There are so many, in fact, that it is easy to become overwhelmed. One of the best is in Equisheim, Domaine Emile Beyer. The address is 7 Rue du Château, 68420 Eguisheim. Which is really convenient as Eguisheim is a village that shouldn’t be missed.
Adorable Kaysersberg is…. just that, adorable.
Tucked amongst the vine rows, Kaysersberg is as charming as charming can be. The village will envelope you in its medieval atmosphere.
We were completely taken by Kaysersberg. In addition to the setting and the buildings, many of the roof tops are home to huge nests of storks. We were there fairly early in the year and there were still young ones hanging around.
While you’re here make sure that you take in the fortified bridge, made out of pink sandstone the region is known for. It’s a great place for a wonderful view of the village.
Also, don’t miss the castle ruins a short walk away, easily missed if unaware. You get some really nice views from up there.
There is more to the town than the few things I mentioned, but like many of the villages in the Alsace, Kaysersberg is the main attraction.
Okay , so this article is about 5 things not to miss in Alsace, but I just had to throw out one more thing. I have heard many people who have said that they passed Alsace by. They were in a hurry to get someplace and didn’t think it had much to offer.
So, tip number five and half? Don’t you dare overlook the Alsace region of France. After you have been there, you will know why we think it is one of the most enticing regions of France.
