The abbey is found towards the end of a narrow road that winds its way through the lush countryside. And, at least in part, it is the setting that adds so much to the experience of visiting Tintern Abbey.
The abbey is so complemented by the natural setting, that it is hard to imagine one without the other. It isn’t hard to understand why the monks picked this place to build it.
As we wandered the grounds of one of the most stirring abbeys in South Wales, we couldn’t help be be astounded by the vast windows and beautiful decorative details displayed in the walls, doorways and soaring archways.
After visiting you will understand how it inspired William Wordsworth to write poem about it. It really is one of the most spectacular ruins in the country.
Tintern was completely forgotten until the late 18th century. At that time the ruins were discovered. It has experienced major renovation work since then, and is now a popular spot to visit.
