First Time Cruisers
Cruise Planning Tips
If you’re planning on taking your first cruise this summer, here are some tips to keep in mind that will help you get the most out of your vacation.
Decide Your Destination
One of the first steps of any vacation, cruise or otherwise, is deciding where in the world you’d like to go. There are all sorts of factors that will play into this decision for first time cruisers.
If you’re looking for warm weather and beaches, then some sort of tropical cruise or getaway to Mexico or the Caribbean might be what you’re looking for. Want history? A cruise around the Mediterranean or across the Greek islands could be the way to go.
For some travelers, local food options are an important factor in choosing a destination. No matter what goes into your decision, picking a region of the world where you’d like to spend some time is a big first step on your cruise venture.
Do Some Research
Now that you’ve selected the area of the world for your cruise, it’s time to dig in and do a bit of research.
This comes in two parts. The first is researching your cruise line and the vessel you’ll be on. It’s nice to get to know the procedures and policies of the cruise line as well as a layout of the ship you’ll be on ahead of time so you don’t stumble around looking like a first-timer.
The second step in your cruise research should be a look at the cities and/or ports you’ll be visiting. This can help you plan your day trips ahead of time and get the most out of each stop along the way.
For example, some cruises stop at large ports, while others stop at ports more off the beaten path. Get a sense of this ahead of time, and then plan your excursions accordingly.
Choose a Cruise Style
Another big decision to make before you leave for your cruise is deciding what kind of experience you’d like to have. For example, if you want to see different cities or countries every day, then an ocean choose is probably for you. If you want a more all-inclusive experience while on the ship, then a luxury cruise is the way to go.
You can tailor your cruise experience even further based on your interests or family situation. For newlyweds, there are cruises that cater to honeymoon-like experiences. For music fans, there are cruises that feature live performers in whichever genre you prefer. For families, there are cruises that focus on events and activities for kids.
There are also cruises on smaller yacht-style vessels that visit multiple island destinations throughout the duration of your trip.
This is true for any type of vacation, including cruises — packing smart can save you lots of headaches.
There are all sorts of cruise-specific packing tips to keep in mind. For example, if you’re planning a longer cruise, bring along some extra clothes hangers so you don’t have to keep all of your clothes crumpled up in your suitcase.
Another good tip is to consider bringing along an electrical power strip to make sure you have ample outlets to charge all of your devices. Also, don’t forget to bring at least a light jacket, even if you’re headed to a warm-weather destination. No matter where you are, nighttime on the upper decks of a cruise ship can get chilly.
You can spend a good amount of time researching and planning your first cruise, and sometimes it can feel like a lot of work. Be sure to make your time and effort worth it by truly enjoying yourself on your first cruise.
Just like any new experience, try to do and see as much as you can, and learn which cruise experiences you love and which you could do without. This will help you get the most out of your first voyage, and it may help make your second cruise even more enjoyable.
