Mont Saint Michel Abbey, is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in all of France. We were lucky enough to visit on a blustery day, and have the place to ourselves. No, I mean it. We, and several dozen others, were able to experience Mont St Michel Abbey without the usual throngs of vacationers and pilgrims.
How did we get so lucky? The Tour de France. Yep, a bicycle race. The roads close for several hours when the tour passes. And, that’s what happened to us. We were the last car to drive onto the island before the roads were closed. Huge luck for us, but you can enjoy a great experience too.
Inside Mont Saint Michel Abbey
The best thing that you can do to really enjoy inside Mont Saint Michel Abbey, as well as out, of course, is to arrive late in the day, stay over night, and leave the next day. Most visitors are day trippers, and the crowds thin towards the end of the day. There will only be a few of you left on the island to enjoy as night falls. Outstanding!
The large pulley wheel was used to raise supplies to the monks in the abbey. On the exterior of the abbey you can see the ramp and the car used in this operation to supply the residents.
As you climb and turn and weave your way through the abbey, you are struck by its grandeur, its ornate facades and furnishings, and the soaring battlements that kept it safe for decades.
Mont Saint Michel Abbey is a fabulous place to visit even if you have to put up with swarms of others. You will just need to take a chill pill, breath and relax.
Mont St Michel Abbey Hotels: Places to Stay
There are not very many choices right on the island, but that is what we recommend you do. So, you will want to plan ahead, and do it early.
We decided that this was the place for us as we really wanted to be on the island and experience the island after dark. The hotel is situated right at the foot of the abbey, and offers fabulous views.
All of the fifteen rooms offer a view of some kind. Some offer a view of the medieval village, some of the abbey itself, and some of the expansive bay.
This is not a super luxe hotel, but there have been renovations and updates making this quite comfortable. Throw in the fabulous location and what’s not to like.
Oh, and let’s not forget the attached restaurant. Wonderfully presented food in a setting that is remarkable. Especially if you can dine on the terrace which offers breathtaking panoramic views over Mont Saint Michel bay.
