When we decided to visit the Rhine we decided to visit the area around Bingen and the Mäuseturm (Mouse Tower). We ended up just a bit down the river in the village of Sankt Goar Germany. A lovely little spot, if I must say so myself.
It’s a pleasant town with the Rhine river on one side and the bluffs on the other. Over looking Sankt Goar Germany is Castle Rheinfels. Which is a very impressive sight perched above the town.
Like many visitors who come to visit “Rheinfels”, we were surprised by the immense size of the ruins, and by the labyrinth of trenches and tunnels, many of which are open so visitors can still visit.
Sankt Goar Germany Accommodations
Our home base for our time in Sankt Goar Germany was the Hotel zur Loreley. The hotel run by the friendly, and helpful, Sebastian Burch and family, is located very centrally in the quiet pedestrian zone.
This was both a blessing and a “curse”. The “curse” was that you are required, if you want to park free, to park away from the hotel some distance which is a bit inconvenient. Otherwise, you can pay to park.
But, having said that, the slight inconvenience is more than made up for by the peacefulness and charm afforded by not having cars everywhere. Don’t know about you, but we are more than happy to give up a little convenience for charm and fewer motor vehicles.
The hotel is clean and comfortable with good size suites at very reasonable prices. Our suite was good sized with a be large enough to handle my 6’8″ frame and still leave room for my wife. Always gets two thumbs up in our book.As of this writing the price for a two room suite is €42 per person for a one or two night stay that also includes a very hearty and tasty German style breakfast with lots of cold cuts and cheeses, along with cereals and the usual breakfast fare. Things to Do In and Around Sankt Goar Germany
This area is one of the most popular places to visit in Germany because it is very picturesque with great food and awesome wines. So, what to do?
This is area is studded with castles. It seems that you can throw a stone without hitting one. In fact, there are so many that we won’t list them all here. The most natural one to visit is the Rheinfels Castle perched above Sankt Goar Germany. And, there are more than a dozen more within easy drive on both sides of the river.
Additionally, we really recommend taking one of the boat tours that ply the river. We went up river to visit the sweet town of Bacharach.
It is really a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. There are two lines that I am aware of, the Köln–Düsseldorfer (K-D) Line, and the Bingen–Rüdesheimer Line. The KD line offers more trips throughout the day, but the Bingen-Rüdesheimer line is a bit cheaper.
I just love being on the sundeck with a couple of beers enjoying the sights and the sun along the river. It really is a great time.
If that is to sedate for you, then hiking around here is also very popular.
We really recommend a couple of days visit to Sankt Goar Germany, and the area around it, and think that you will, too.
