What to Do in Bacharach Germany and Sankt Goar Germany
What to do in Bacharach Germany should never be a question you have to ask! This is wine country. This is castle country. Beautiful, awe inspiring sights are around every corner.
With a full day planned, you need to pack away a hearty breakfast. Fortunately, a German breakfast, or “frühstuck”, is the very definition of hearty.
Fresh brewed, aromatic kafé. Platters of mouth watering cold cuts, and creamy savory cheeses. My mouth waters just thinking of it.
What to Do in and Around Bacharach Germany?
After breakfast, time to begin. We started our day with a visit to Sankt Goar, and the impressive Burg Rheinfels high on the bluffs. Time for the ascent.
The uphill climb to visit Burg Rheinfels, a castle, which sits above St. Goar, is certainly worth the effort, and you’ll be happy you fueled up.
In its time, Rheinfels was the largest and most imposing, and most influential, of any of the fortifications along the Middle Rhine. Exploring the tumbled ruins and climbing the 4 foot thick walls is an amazing experience.
And, you soon come to realize just how large it was. In fact, it was approximately 5 times larger than its current state.
Now, a portion of the castle has been transformed into a luxury hotel, with a wellness center, and restaurant.
Though we started our day at Rheinfels above Sankt Goar, there is no reason for you to do the same. There are so many places to see, you’ll enjoy yourself no matter the order.
Rhein River Cruise to Bacharach
When we returned to the village, we had just enough time to catch one of the tour boats that cruise the Romantic Rhine River. The cruise took us from Sankt Goar, our home base, to Bacharach, a town that is filled to the rafters with half-timbered buildings lining narrow streets.
Bacharach is a cozy little town nestled along the banks of one of the most scenic stretches of the Rhine river. It takes about an hour and a half drive from Frankfurt, where you will probably fly into.
This stretch of the Rhine is so popular with visitors, because it is dotted with castles of all shapes, sizes, and states of ruin and restoration. All the castles were built so that money from tolls could be extracted from vessels passing along the river.
The area of the Rhine is about more than castles though. It is also world renown for its white wines. These wines are made from grapes harvested from the terraced vineyards that line the steep banks along the river.
What to do in Bacharach Germany? So, so, much! That’s the answer to that question. You are going to absolutely love Bacharach. We did!
The charm of this small town is made all the more so by its friendly people. The historic old buildings, cobblestone streets, and a big old castle with panoramic views on the river will steal your heart.
One of the main delights of visiting any place new is, of course, the food. Eating and drinking here was a delight, and will be one of the highlights of your trip. Bacharach, along with Sankt Goar, down river, are great bases to take a scenic cruise along the Rhine, and gawking at the castles along it’s banks.
Though Rheinfels, mentioned above, is the largest, and probably, most impressive in scale, there are many others for you to take in, too. If castles are your thing. And, why wouldn’t they be?
On a cruise down the river, you will see between Bacharach and St.Goar the following castles: Schonburg castle
, Pfalz Castle, Gutenfels castle, and
the Loreley, a steep cliff jutting into the river across the river from Sankt Goar.
Places to Stay in Bacharach and Sankt Goar
Dead center of charming Bacharach overlooking the beautiful main street. The town is quite and friendly with old world charm.
Great location with super views of the river. Super friendly hosts. Caveats: pack light as there are lots of stairs, and there is some train noise.
Hotels in Sankt Goar
This hotel was so very nice. Clean, friendly, right in town, awesome little restaurant. Did I say helpful? When our car broke down, they went out of their way to help us get things sorted out. Highly recommend Hotel Zur Loreley!
