This is a first for us. Visiting Annecy France was kind of off the radar. But, I must tell you that you need to spend some time here. It is, without any doubt, one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited.
Annecy France is in the foothills of the Alps, so weather can be a little iffy from time to time. And, so it was for us this first full day in town. A wonderful day none-the-less.
Visiting Annecy France offers a diverse experience that makes this a real delight for just about everybody. The lake and the surrounding hills and mountains make this a Mecca for active sports enthusiasts. Climbing, para-gliding, and a wide range of water sports are extremely popular. And, you can’t forget cycling, either.
What makes Annecy such a treasure, though, is the old town with its narrow streets and canals. This is another one of many towns that have been given the moniker of “Little Venice”, or something quite close.
Wandering along the rustic streets, back alleyways, and canals is just what the doctor ordered. The canals and windows are a riot of color from the many flower boxes adorning the fronts of the buildings and foot bridges.
The restaurants and shops add to the kaleidoscope of colors that make this lovely town just that, lovley! Exquisitely so!
Visiting Annecy France: Places to Stay
As you would expect, in what is essentially a resort town, there are plenty of accommodation options when visiting Annecy France. From simple rooms to small bed and breakfasts to upscale hotels, there are a lot of choices.
One caveat, however. Though there are a lot of places to stay, you need to book early as Annecy is very popular and it can sometimes be difficult to find a place that is available during your desired travel window. That was certainly the case for us.
We found ourselves staying at the Hotel des Alpes, because we wanted to be in the center of town, or as close to the center as possible. This hotel, while not being in the center is very well positioned on the edge of the Old Town.
When you arrive you will find 32 renovated rooms that are very cozy. And, very reasonably priced. As of this update, a comfortable double rate is €73, or $82 U.S! That is very hard to beat if you are looking for a moderately priced hotel.
