Starting near the Canadian border is the university town of Bellingham. This town is pretty near and dear to my heart as I went to Western Washington University in the 70’s. These days, though, the town has changed. A lot!
Once a pretty rough and tumble workaday town with a liberal college thrown in the mix, Bellingham has seen a remarkable resurgence. The downtown area retains much of it’s funky side and is a lot fun to stroll around. The 3 Best Washington State Vacation Spots for a great time in Western Washington. #TBIN Click To Tweet
You’ll find the area in the midst of renovation, too. Recently I wrote of the number of fun tasty micro-breweries here, called Popular Bellingham Breweries People Rave About! that you are going to want to check out while in town.
Perhaps the area that is most fun these days is the section of town called Fairhaven. Here you will find many inviting cafés, restaurants, interesting shops, old architecture, and fun outdoor experiences, too.

La Conner is one of the most picturesque towns on Western Washington, particularly in the early spring during the annual Tulip Festival. Visiting the Tulip Festival is one of the most popular events of the year, and can be well worth fighting the crowds. Just make sure that you make reservations well in advance.
La Conner is well off the beaten path located as it is on the Swinomish Channel, offering a really lovely setting. This is a town packed with great galleries, tasty restaurants, and, for the more active, plenty of things to do. All wrapped in an 1800’s package.
In addition to the Tulip Festival, La Conner now promotes other festivals as well. In the fall there is the La Conner Beer Festival – Brew on the Slough 2016 which is part of Washington State Fall Getaway – 2016 Celebrate Autumn in La Conner. The list of events is huge and growing, as well as being very unique. How about this one on October 9th; the 3rd Annual Pleasant Ridge Cemetery Tour – Presented by Skagit County Historical Museum, Noon – 4pm? Not your cup of tea? There are a ton more!

La Conner has a number of places for romantic couples to stay.
La Conner Channel Lodge just might be our favorite place to stay in La Conner. We love that it is right on the water. Our favorite is the Captain’s Suite, though all of the suites and rooms are quite nice. Why do we like the Captain’s Suite? Because, it is a spacious and inviting room for the perfect escape. Sleep in ultimate comfort on the King Size Bed. Experience spectacular views and watch as yachts float by on your private balcony. Cozy up by your fireplace or unwind in your jacuzzi bath tub. It’s close to all the that’s happening in town, making it a choice location. For more on La Conner Channel Lodge.
Hotel Planter is an historic main street hotel that uses original doors, windows, railings, and wood trim to keep it authentic. Overlooking the water(slightly) this hotel may not be for everyone as it has a floral theme throughout. Not everyone’s cup of tea. This National historic Inn is right in the middle of things making it very accessible to all the galleries. For more on Hotel Planter.
La Conner Country Inn is the sister hotel to La Conner Channel Lodge. The country Inn is a warm and inviting place that offers a really comfortable vibe. Filled with warm woods and a friendly staff you may find yourself wanting to stay. It’s just steps from shops, art galleries, and dining. For more on La Conner Country Inn.
