Brittany Driving Tour
Part Two of a Brittany France Road Trip
A Brittany driving tour opens up an impressive panorama of sights and experiences that are exquisite. Be prepared to step back as far as the Neolithic period during your travels.
In part one of our Brittany France Road Trip, we shared the impressive beauty of the area that immediately surrounds the walled fortress city of St Malo. St Malo is great jumping off place to begin your Brittany driving tour.
After St Malo, it’s time to move farther west to discover Pink Granite coast, and the seaside port town of Roscoff. This area is best know for some of the most remarkable rock coastline in all of France. Make sure to take it all in at sunset when it’s particularly stunning.
Roscoff itself is a charming town. That is home to solid granite built 16th and 17th-century houses. A fun little town to meander around. While the town is a delight to visit, it really is best as a home base of your Brittany driving tour to see the coastline mentioned earlier.
Also, while here, take a shuttle out to the Isle of Batz (pronounced Ba) for an authentic Breton experience. In addition to the white sand beaches, the dunes , and other natural beauty, you’ll find evidence of the ancient settlements that date all the way back to the Bronze Age.
Places to Stay in Roscoff
Our recommendation is the two-star Hotel-du-Centre, which, somewhat confusingly, goes by Chez Janie as well. Formerly a corsair’s house, it’s right on the port and recently renovate in eye poppinly bold colors. Attached are a decent brasserie and the bar. It’s located at 5 Rue Gambetta.
If you are looking for something a bit more upscale, then this may be more to your liking.
Things to See Nearby
We are unabashed, serial Chateau-a-philes! How can you not be in France?
Le Château de Kerjean
Very near Roscoff is Le Château de Kerjean. A smallish chateau built during the late 16th century, is pretty representative of the French Renaissance.
Within it’s ramparts you’ll find the “manor house”, chapel and courtyard. You can’t help but appreciate the grandeur of the Renaissance-style architecture, and the huge grounds around the château.
This Brittany driving tour is going to take us from Roscoff to our next stop Quimper. Brittany is so large and has so many sights, it just naturally goes without saying that we have probably overlooked some great locations.
