Ultimate United Kingdom Road Trip – Aug & Sept 2017 (Part 1)
Let me interject here, that flying from Seattle to London with a layover in Reykjavík and then picking up your rental car, may not be the best idea. We survived it, but driving after having had no sleep in over 24 hours is not the wisest thing to do.
Our exploration really did begin the next day, after we had time to recover a little bit getting ready for a long car journey. The next morning found us taking in the sites of some of the towns near Bath.
Wells and Glastonbury
Two towns very near Bath, are Wells and Glastonbury. Wells is a fabulous cathedral and market town that we absolutely fell in love with. Even though I manage to come very near ruining our trip on the very first day, but that will be for a later post. And, Glastonbury is so unique. It is a town that has embraced crystals and the mystical. It is also the home of the huge Glastonbury music festival.
This little side trip was the perfect way to get us refreshed and ready to hit the road for Wales and points west and north!
Wales, and our first stop at Tintern Abbey, are not that far from our lodgings in Bath. Tintern Abbey was such an evocative experience and, though it’s out-of-the-way a bit, it’s well worth visiting. We moved on from Tintern to Cardiff and what turned out to be a comedy of driving errors and misdirection. Though I will admit to you that at the time it was not so funny. Our mood was a tense.
Cardiff – Capitol of Wales
A bustling city crammed full of college students on a Friday night leads to one heck of a boisterous and rowdy atmosphere. We can not wait to go back to Cardiff. No, not to party, but experience more of the town as we only had one afternoon and night to explore the city center and castle a bit.
Heading toward the Atlantic, our drive takes us to Tenby, an absolutely lovely seaside town that we were enchanted with and then on to the little of village of Pembroke and it’s imposing castle. Two small towns that we were so please to see. It was in Pembroke, in the driving rain, that we found one of the very nicest of BnB’s. I’ll tell you about that place in another post.
We headed north along the stunningly beautiful Welsh coast to such great places as Tremadog, Portmeirion (a coastal town that looks like it would be more at home on the Italian coast), Harlech Castle, Caernarfon, and Conwy. I’m sure that I’m leaving something out of the list, but there were so many appealing places in Wales.
Wales has more castles per square mile than any place else in the UK, probably the world, so we must be forgiven if they are mentioned a lot. Towns like Conwy were a lot of fun too.
There were so many places to talk about on our ultimate United Kingdom road trip that we will be breaking this into several pages. We have much more in Scotland, and England to share. Stay tuned!
