Visit York UK – Get Your Viking On
But, when you visit York UK it has more than that up its sleeve.
Our visit York UK was prompted by our Viking Ancestry. And, it made the perfect jumping off place for my shield maiden and me to put on our horned helmets, pick up our double bladed battle axes, and commence our invasion of the rest of England.
We have a post referring a bit to the Vikings. One of the best ways to find out more when in York is to take the Original Viking Walk led by Neil Tattersall. But, there is more Viking-ness to find here too.
Jorvik Viking Centre
For the true Viking fan, this center can not be missed! The Jorvik is on the site of one of the most famous and astounding discoveries of modern archaeology. The center will provide you with as realistic an experience as possible with sights, sounds, and smells of what a Viking village would have been like.
But, what if you are not into Viking history? There are any number of other fun and interesting things to do when you visit York UK, as well.
The National Railway Museum
We climbed aboard The National Railway Museum to see what that was all about. Now, let me share that I am not one of those train lovin’ guys that tinker with a model train in the basement.
We went because we wanted to experience something different, and walked away impressed. And, you will too. And, you need not be into trains to appreciate this museum and the great displays they have.
York’s Chocolate Story
Given the number of chocoholics, you must know that this is a very popular tour in York. York is one of the chocolate making capitols of the world. In fact, much of York’s wealth is because of their chocolate making prowess. At one time a very huge proportion of the city’s population was employed by the 3 chocolate factories.
The tour is a fun and entertaining way to get to know a bit about chocolate and the industry in York. There are multi-media displays, and some hands-on activities, that make it more fun. We thought it was a great diversion. After all, did you know that KitKat bars started in York. See!!!
York Castle Museum
This is one of the best history museums that I have ever visited. And, Jo agrees. When you are in visit York, UK, you absolutely must visit here.
The Victorian village they have built is really stupendous. It is as if you enter Mr. Peabody’s Wayback machine and were walking the streets, looking on the shop windows, and experiencing life then.
But, it doesn’t stop there. Their World War I display is also magnificent. If you don’t leave the exhibit shaking your head in wonder at man’s folly, I will be surprised.
These are just two of the Museum’s exhibits. You will leave, as we did, thoroughly satisfied.
The Ghost Bus Tours
A haunting and spooky visit to the darker side of York. This is a theatrical sightseeing tour that blends comedy with its darkness to make for a really entertaining tour while onboard a classic 1960s Routemaster bus. A totally good time!
Of course, this is just a taster, there is so much more than this to see and do when you visit York UK. And, you needn’t limit yourself to the city of York. There are plenty of things to see in the surrounding areas as well.
Jo and I really enjoyed our stay. We’re pretty sure that you will want to visit York UK too.
